Best Tools for Large Format Tiles (600mm+) — 2026 UK Guide

Large format tiles demand different tools. Here are the five professional tools that make the difference between a stunning large format installation and an expensive disaster.

By Brandon Miller, Professional Tiler

Large format tiles are now the dominant trend in UK bathrooms and kitchens. 600×600mm, 600×1200mm, even 1200×2400mm slabs. The results, when done properly, are extraordinary — minimal grout lines, seamless surfaces, contemporary precision.

Done badly, they're an expensive catastrophe. Cracked slabs at £60–150/m². Lippage that catches the light on every panel. Tiles that rock underfoot.

The difference between the two outcomes? Usually the tools. Large format tiling demands specific equipment. Here's what you actually need.

1. Best Large Format Tile Cutter: Sigma 4DN 95cm

Price: ~£489
Cuts up to: 95cm
Max thickness: 15mm porcelain

The Sigma 4DN is the professional benchmark for large format manual cutting. The breaking mechanism is engineered specifically for large format — the twin-rail guide keeps the scoring head perfectly perpendicular, and the central breaking bar applies pressure evenly across the full tile width.

For 600×600mm, 600×900mm, and 600×1200mm tiles, this is the tool. The scoring wheel is a quality Italian-made component that lasts for thousands of cuts. The frame is heavy (14kg) but the weight helps — it stabilises the tool under the pressure needed for 10mm porcelain.

What it can't do: Anything over 95cm in length needs a wet saw. And nothing over about 12mm thickness cuts cleanly without a wet saw.

Verdict: The best manual cutter for large format. If you're doing large format work regularly, this pays for itself quickly in avoided breakages.

2. Best Wet Saw for Large Format: Raimondi RTC Battipav Basic 1200

Price: ~£850–£1,200
Max tile length: 120cm
Who it's for: Professionals doing regular large format work

For anything over 95cm or any tile requiring a diagonal or L-shaped cut, you need a wet saw. The Raimondi is the professional standard in UK trade use — solid stainless table, accurate fence, and a blade slot that handles the weight of a 120cm slab without flex.

Budget alternative: the Sigma SM3 wet saw (~£450) handles up to 90cm and is significantly lighter. Adequate for occasional large format work.

3. Best Laser Level for Large Format: DEWALT DCLE34035B

Price: ~£249
Type: Self-levelling cross-line, 3×360° planes
Who it's for: Any professional tiler working with large format

Large format tiling has a flatness tolerance of 3mm over 2m. That's tight. Achieving it requires accurate levelling before you start and regular checks throughout.

The DEWALT DCLE34035B projects three full 360° planes — horizontal, vertical, and a secondary horizontal. On a bathroom floor, I'll set it up in the centre of the room and use it to check every tile against a consistent datum.

The green beam is visible in normal daylight at distances up to 6–8 metres. The self-levelling mechanism is accurate to 1.5mm/10m — significantly better than budget lasers.

Verdict: The best professional laser for tile work. Non-negotiable on large format.

4. Best Suction Cups: Raimondi Tile Handler / Ox Pro Lifters

Price: ~£35–£80 per pair
Who it's for: Anyone handling large format tiles

You cannot safely carry a 600×1200mm 10mm porcelain tile by hand without a proper grip. The tile is too heavy, too smooth, and too expensive to risk dropping.

Tile handling suction cups (a pair of pads connected by a handle) give you a secure grip on large format tiles and — critically — allow you to position the tile accurately over the adhesive bed before lowering it down. You never slide large format onto the adhesive; you lower it vertically.

Recommended: Raimondi or OX Pro both produce reliable suction cup lifters. Get a pair with at least 150kg combined holding capacity.

5. Best Lippage Control System: Raimondi Clips and Wedges

Price: ~£20–£40 for a starter kit (500 clips + 100 wedges)
Who it's for: Any large format installation

Lippage — one tile sitting fractionally higher than the adjacent tile — is the most common complaint on large format floors. Even 1mm of lippage is visible in raking light. Over 2mm looks like building site finish.

Lippage control systems (a clip that spans two adjacent tiles and a wedge that's tightened to pull both tiles to the same level) solve this. You install them as you tile, leave them in place while the adhesive sets, then break the clips off with a rubber mallet.

Raimondi is the professional standard. Their system is precise, the clips break cleanly, and the wedges can be reused many times.

Verdict: Essential for large format floors. Not optional if you want a professional result.
